Red leech

These gross little things lived back in the cretaceous period and were the bane of the Silurians’ existence. Weirdly, at least one of them survived until Victorian times, though. Red leeches secreted a poisonous liquid that turned some people into bright-red corpses, others into frozen exhibit pieces, and others still into megalomaniacs with ambitions of becoming a Victorian era Hugo Drax.
